FAQ

  • Why not a longer instruction time?

The child’s age plays a significant role in how long the child can manage their excitement, fear, attention span, and potential discomfort. Smaller children tend to get colder faster, and once the discomfort from being cold sets in, their learning rate decreases rapidly. Lessons longer than 15 minutes contribute to mental fatigue, which reduces the likelihood of ending the lesson successfully. 15-minute lessons create an environment that maximizes a child’s growth and minimizes the potential for a negative experience.

  • What ages to do you teach?

We believe that children under the age of two are not developmentally ready to receive the instruction necessary to acquire the skills required to become pool safe and begin learning the swimming process. We utilize some of the progressions taught within the Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) program. However, our instructors are not currently trained in ISR.

  • How do I know if my child is ready for swim lessons?

You know your child better than anyone, and we want to help both you and your child have an exceptional experience when learning to swim. Before signing up for swim lessons, consider the following factors: How does the child do when bathing and washing their hair? How does the child respond when introduced to new people or situations? Will the child’s taught skills be reinforced outside of lessons? Does the child require support when being exposed to a new activity? How does the child respond when getting into the pool with a guardian?

  • How many sessions will my child need to swim independently?

Many factors make it impossible to answer that question accurately. What is the child’s age? Is there a pool at home where you can practice developing skills? What is the child’s relationship with water? Has the child had an accident involving water or the pool? How does the child respond to new people or situations? All of those factors play a significant role in estimating when a child may become an independent swimmer.

  • How many sessions should we sign up for?

This is another unanswerable question. The sessions are held weekly, allowing families to come and go as needed, based on various factors. A family must take into account the following factors when deciding how many sessions their child/children are going to participate in: parents’ schedule, parents’ goals/outcomes for lessons, financials, vacations, summer school/camps, and naps.

  • Should we sign up for back to back sessions or skip sessions and then do a second session?

There are benefits to both approaches. However, I believe that by structuring sessions back-to-back, instruction time is maximized. There is a natural amount of time that it takes for a child to develop trust, and if the sessions are back-to-back, it maximizes the connection from the previous week. Thus, eliminating the additional time that may be required if there is a break in the instruction.
